Remarks on the Structure of the Recherche de la Verité: The Role of Vision in God: The present article will discuss the argumentative context in which Nicolas Malebranche presents the doctrine of the vision in God in his work, Recherche de la Verité. Malebranche is known for this doctrine about human cognition, and also for his occasionalistic view of causality, and such positions are only properly understood when put in the argumentative context designed by the author, which is not usually (...) seen in commentaries. With this goal, we intend to look into the precise position of the vision of God in the Recherche and to identify the argument of the work as a whole. Thus, by seeing how the malebranchean theory of cognition fits in his philosophical project, we will be able to adequately reconstruct this important and influential philosophical doctrine of the seventeenth century.Keywords: Nicolas Malebranche. Com isso, pretendemos situar a posição da visão em Deus na Recherche partindo, em um primeiro momento, da análise do fio condutor da obra. Después de hacer un breve recuento del origen y de las confusiones del debate acerca del contenido no-conceptual de nuestra experiencia tanto en la tradición analítica como en las interpretaciones de la filosofía teórica de Kant, suscribo y complemento una de las objeciones de Oroño 2017 al no-conceptualismo de Heidemann 2016: que no debemos inferir a partir de la irreductibilidad de las intuiciones a conceptos que las intuiciones puedan representar objetos sin la actividad conceptual.

The interest in ethical leadership has grown in the past few years, with an emphasis on the mechanisms through which it affects organizational life. However, research on the boundary conditions that limit and/or enhance its effectiveness is still scarce, especially concerning one of the main misconceptions about ethical leadership, its incompatibility with effectiveness . Thus, the present study examines the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational deviance via affective commitment to the organization, as a reflection of the quality of the (...) employee–organization relationship and proposes this relationship is conditional on the supervisor’s personal reputation for performance . Using a sample of 224 employees and their respective supervisors from 18 organizations, we confirmed our hypotheses . Our findings suggest that ethical leadership is positively related to employees’ affective commitment to the organization, particularly when supervisor’s reputation for performance is high, which in turn is associated with decreased organizational deviance. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings conclude the paper. (shrink)

Previous studies making use of indirect processing measures have shown that perceptual grouping can occur outside the focus of attention. However, no previous study has examined the possibility of subliminal processing of perceptual grouping. The present work steps forward in the study of perceptual organization, reporting direct evidence of subliminal processing of Gestalt patterns. In two masked priming experiments, Gestalt patterns grouped by proximity or similarity that induced either a horizontal or vertical global orientation of the stimuli were presented as (...) masked primes and followed by visible targets that could be congruent or incongruent with the orientation of the primes. The results showed a reliable priming effect in the complete absence of prime awareness for both proximity and similarity grouping principles. These findings suggest that a phenomenal report of the Gestalt pattern is not mandatory to observe an effect on the response based on the global properties of Gestalt stimuli. (shrink)

The enactive approach and the skilled intentionality framework are two closely related forms of radical embodied cognition that nonetheless exhibit important differences. In this paper, I focus on a conceptual disparity regarding the normative character of action and perception. Whereas the skilled intentionality framework describes the norms of action and perception as the capacity of embodied agents to become attuned (i.e., skilled intentionality) to preestablished normative frameworks (i.e., situated normativity), the enactive approach describes the same phenomenon as the enactment of (...) norms (i.e., as sense-making) at different levels of organization that go from individual biological agents to linguistic encounters. I will argue that although both accounts accurately recognize important features of the norms of action and perception, they also have significant shortcomings. Norm-attunement accurately sees normative, ecological frameworks as the necessary set of constraints for the existence of norms at play in sociocultural bodily practices, but it fails to acknowledge the temporal and open-ended character of these norms and frameworks. Norm-enactment, by contrast, acknowledges that norms of action and perception are temporally open-ended, but fails to explicitly recognize that environmental normative frameworks are necessary for the enactment and development of all sort of norms in the interactional domain of an agent-environment system. To overcome these problems, I propose an enactive-ecological approach to norms of action and perception. This approach consists in describing norm-enactment as a result of a developmental process I call norm-development. This process describes the enactment of norms from the background of ecological, normative frameworks. These frameworks are norms enacted in the past of the interactional history of the agent-environment system that remain open to new configurations (new norms) in the present. To clarify conceptually norm-development, I appeal to Merleau-Ponty’s descriptions of norms of perception, and more particularly to his concept of spatial levels. Like the enactive approach, Merleau-Ponty recognizes that perceptual norms emerge in the interactional history of the agent-environment system, but he also posits that ecological, normative frameworks, that he calls levels, enable and constrain the emergence of perceptual norms and its development. O presente artigo pretende resumir e interrogar o conceito de “pessoa” na filosofia de Paul Ricœur (1913-2005) a partir do texto _Note sur la personne _(_Nota sobre a pessoa_). Esse texto foi publicado em 1936 na revista teológica _Le Semeur _(_O Semeador_), um pequeno ensaio no qual Ricœur visa apontar o valor conceitual que a noção de pessoa possui, além de apresentar as características constituintes dessa noção.

In the last 10 years, emotional intelligence has become a current issue of research in psychology, and there are indicators to consider that emotional intelligence should be analyzed to help the coach to behave effectively during competitions. According to Boardley’s (2018) revised model of coaching efficacy, coaches’ emotional intelligence is predictive of their efficacy beliefs, which, in turn, is predictive of coaching behavior. However, little is known about the mediating effects of coaching efficacy dimensions on the relationships between coach’s emotional (...) intelligence and reactive behaviors in competitive settings. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine mediating effects of coaching efficacy dimensions on the relationship between emotional intelligence and coaches’ reactive behaviors during a game using a multimethod approach. Participants were 258 coaches of youth football players aged 9 to 17 years old. Observations in situ using Coaching Behavior Assessment System were carried on 258 football games during two seasons. At the end of each game, coaches completed the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale and the Coaching Efficacy Scale. Structural equation modelling analyses revealed that motivation efficacy and character building mediated the relationship between regulation of emotion and positive and negative coaches’ reactions during game. Specifically, motivation efficacy mediated the association between regulation of emotion and positive coaches’ reactions, and the relationship between regulation of emotion and negative coaches’ reactions were mediated by motivation efficacy and character building. In addition, coaching level moderated the relationships between emotional intelligence, self-efficacy and coaches’ reactive behaviors. Findings of the present study showed that coaching efficacy dimensions (i.e., motivation efficacy and character building) that have the capacity to influence their confidence in ability to affect the psychological mood and positive attitude of athletes, transfer the effects of emotional intelligence (i.e., regulation of emotion) on coaches’ verbal reactions during a youth soccer game. Specifically, a coach who feels competent to regulate their own emotions would perceive high beliefs of efficacy to motivate and to build character of their athletes, and this insight has an impact on their positive verbal reactions in response to athletes’ performances. O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar as contribuições de Ludwig Wittgenstein à fundamentação do saber e prática psicológica. Isso será feito em dois movimentos fundamentais: em primeiro lugar, reconstruiremos os interlocutores de Wittgenstein e as questões que estavam pressupostas em cada um deles. Em segundo lugar, argumentaremos sobre o método analítico que Wittgenstein escolheu para lidar com essas questões. Isto significa, pelo menos, duas coisas: Wittgenstein assume que a linguagem descritiva é o padrão para a interlocução humana, mas que (...) também a linguagem expressiva tem seu lugar de importância, ainda que com ressalvas; essa distinção de gramáticas fundamentará o seu método de lidar com as questões psicológicas: através da interpretação e descrição do comportamento, entendido como manifestação externa das vivências internas, a terceira pessoa terá um acesso privilegiado às ocorrências da consciência da primeira pessoa. Concluiremos o trabalho com considerações críticas sobre os benefícios e as deficiências da abordagem wittgensteiniana. (shrink)

no conjunto imenso e nada sistematizado da filosofia de Slavoj Žižek, a noção benjaminiana de “violência divina” é recorrentemente articulada. Para os propósitos do presente artigo, que é pensar a introdução de um terceiro elemento destituinte da dialética da violência que põe e mantém o direito, nos valeremos três textos do filósofo esloveno: Robespierre, ou a “divina violência” do terror (2007), Violência divina (2008) e Da democracia à violência divina (2009). Nesse sentido, reconstruiremos o que está no centro da sua (...) argumentação em que Žižek se apropria do conceito benjaminiano, para em seguida, mostrarmos a inadequação de sua interpretação para pensarmos uma teoria do poder destituinte. Corremos o risco de afirmar uma inadequação, não pelos resultados que Žižek alcançou, mas porque ele arroga para si uma interpretação do conceito de Benjamin que em nosso entendimento não está próximo de sua argumentação. o presente trabalho procura investigar se existe algum elo de união que perpassa a crítica à civilização empreendida pelo filósofo alemão Walter Benjamin, bem como algo que passa necessariamente pela sua rejeição ao capitalismo, impulsionada tanto pelo romantismo alemão, pelo marxismo libertário quando pelo messianismo judaico. Em meio a um aparente aglomerado filosófico, nossa pergunta metodológica indaga-se pela possibilidade de falar de um fio condutor no pensamento do filósofo das inúmeras passagens e anotações fragmentadas? A hipótese que sustentaremos no presente (...) trabalho é que o messianismo de Benjamin percorre toda a sua obra, como uma corrente elétrica que alimenta e ilumina todos os seus escritos. (shrink)

En este artículo abordo algunos de los aspectos más importantes de la concepción filosófica del joven Emmanuel Levinas, centrándome en los tres siguientes: la conciencia como ser absoluto, la irreductibilidad de la teoría y la concepción del método fenomenológico.

Se discuten en este trabajo las implicaciones ontológicas de un posible modelo de causa común para las correlaciones EPR, cuya característica principal radica en el hecho de que las operaciones de medida en ambas alas del experimento son explícitamente relevantes para las causas comunes. Gracias precisamente a este tipo de dependencias entre causas comunes y operaciones de medida, el modelo sortea las implicaciones del teorema de Bell. El modelo, sin embargo, resulta patentemente no local, lo que se refleja bien en (...) una ontología en que las causas comunes se conciben como eventos deslocalizados espacio-temporalmente o, en caso contrario, en la existencia de interacciones causales no locales. We offer a review of some of the most influential views on the status of Reichenbach’s Principle of the Common Cause (PCC) for genuinely indeterministic systems. We first argue that the PCC is properly a conjunction of two distinct claims, one metaphysical and another methodological. Both claims can and have been contested in the literature, but here we simply assume that the metaphysical claim is correct, in order to focus our analysis on the status of the methodological claim. We briefly (...) review the most entrenched or classical positions, including Salmon’s ‘interactive forks’, van Fraassen’s scepticism, and Cartwright’s generalisation of the fork criterion. We then go on to review the results of the ‘Budapest school’ on the existence of formally defined screening-off events for any correlation —by means of the ideas of probability space extensibility and (Reichenbachian common cause) completability. We distinguish the Budapest doctrine clearly from any of the classical conceptions, and thus present an overall framework for discussions of causal inference in quantum mechanics. The framework, however preliminary, is essential work for a thorough assessment of the conditions under which PCC may be a reliable tool for causal inference in a genuinely probabilistic (indeterministic) context. A teologia esforça-se por repertoriar e sistematizar o que a revelação e a fé trazem ao crente sobre o problema do sentido da história, da peregrinação através do tempo da humanidade pensada em seu conjunto. Ela enfatiza, não tanto o conhecimento, mas o estado espiritual de felicidade ao qual a humanidade deve ascender antes do fim da vida na terra. Os modernos não aceitam a proposta teológica e têm por ambição descentralizar a história tradicionalmente ordenada por uma visão cristocêntrica do (...) mundo. O historiador, isentando-se da facção, assume o discurso racional sobre a trajetória dos humanos a partir de um novo núcleo referencial interpretativo, a saber, a ideia de humanidade. Voltaire apresenta-se como legítimo representante dessa perspectiva. A história sob o prisma voltairiano é colocada como problema e não como dogmática com características de uma aquisição definitiva. O problema histórico é o de compreender o mundo atual e a humanidade nele inserida. O objetivo, portanto, do trabalho foi apresentar a proposta teológica para a história e a crítica a ela desenvolvida por Voltaire, de forma a evidenciar a originalidade da abordagem moderna do fenômeno histórico. Sprache, Einstellung und Rationalität stellen zentrale Begriffe eines komplexen Zusammenhangs dar, der in seiner philosophischen Tragweite noch viel zu wenig verstanden wird. In zweierlei Hinsicht trägt die vorliegende Arbeit dazu bei, dieses Desiderat zu beseitigen: Im ersten Teil wird dafür argumentiert, daß Ansätze, die glaubhaft machen wollen, daß bei der Erklärung von Intentionalität auf Rationalitätsannahmen zu verzichten sei, schon deshalb fehlerhaft sind, weil es bei Einstellungs-Zuschreibungen nicht auf die Individuierung geistiger Zustände ankommt. Vielmehr besagt die zentrale Überlegung des zweiten Teils, (...) daß dasjenige, was gemeinhin als die kognitive Signifikanz von Einstellungs-Äußerungen bezeichnet wird, am einfachsten durch eine ergänzende Theorie der pragmatischen Kontext-Bedingungen zu erfassen ist. Hier ist dann auch der Ort, an dem der im Titel gestiftete Zusammenhang am deutlichsten zutage tritt. (shrink)

El objetivo de este artículo es contrastar dos maneras de entender ladiferencia y la colaboración de intuiciones y conceptos para responder ala pregunta de si tienen lugar los contenidos no-conceptuales de estadosmentales en la filosofía teórica de Kant. Estas dos maneras de entenderla relación entre intuiciones y conceptos en Kant son la que Efraín Lazossostiene en el primer capítulo de su libro Disonancias de la Crítica (2014,pp. 19-60) y la que yo he defendido en distintas publicaciones (2000,2008, 2011, 2012). De (...) acuerdo con Lazos, las intuiciones para Kant tienencontenido no-conceptual. De acuerdo conmigo, las intuiciones para Kantsolo pueden representar algo, es decir, tener contenido, si están articuladasconceptualmente y, en este sentido, su contenido es siempre conceptual. Antonio Zirión Quijano, coordinador de las Obras completas de José Gaos, ha reunido en El sentido de la filosofía todos los textos que ha publicado sobre este filósofo tan importante para la recepción de la fenomenología en México. En mis comentarios a este libro, contrasto en primer lugar la posición de Fernando Salmerón, el anterior coordinador de esas obras, y la de Zirión ante la concepción de la metafísica de Gaos, un subjetivismo extremo en el cual sobresale la figura del (...) filósofo como un soberbio, empeñado en realizar una tarea imposible. Posteriormente destaco la preocupación que Zirión expresa por esta visión pesimista del quehacer filosófico cada vez con mayor énfasis a lo largo de la serie de ensayos de la primera parte de su libro. In this piece I will focus on what I think is a central aspect of Albert Camus’s thinking, embodied in the distinction he makes in The Rebel between rebel and revolutionary. His is a philosophy of rebellion and he thinks that revolutions are a distorted expression of our need to rebel against that which we cannot accept. His views should serve as a counterpoint to those who think that an all-or-nothing approach to social change is desirable. And the issue here (...) is not that embodied crudely in the reactionary /radical dichotomy. Rather, it is a defence of the need to rebel within limits, not so much to preserve the old against the threat of the new but, instead, to preserve basic human decency from the dark side of outrage, without dismissing what is crucial about outrage and emancipatory struggles.
